Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds? Myth vs Reality

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds? Myth vs Reality

    The Confusion Explained

Mention lab-grown diamonds at a family gathering in Hyderabad and you will likely get mixed reactions. Some will nod knowingly. Others will raise an eyebrow and ask, 'But are they real?' This blog exists to answer that question once and for all — with science, not sales pitch.

Myth 1: Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Fake

Reality: Lab-grown diamonds are 100% real diamonds. They have the same chemical composition (pure crystallised carbon), the same physical properties, and the same optical characteristics as diamonds mined from the earth. The word 'fake' applies to simulants like cubic zirconia or glass — substances that merely look like diamonds but have a completely different composition.

Lab-grown diamonds are not simulants. They are actual diamonds grown in a controlled environment. Even the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) classifies them as diamonds, not imitation stones.

Myth 2: Lab-Grown Diamonds Look Different

Reality: No one can tell the difference between a lab-grown and a natural diamond by looking at them, touching them, or using standard jeweller's tools. Even professional gemologists with decades of experience cannot distinguish between the two with the naked eye or a standard loupe.

Only highly specialised spectroscopic equipment, available only in advanced gemological laboratories, can identify a diamond's origin. In daily life — at a wedding in Hyderabad, at an office party, or across a dinner table — a lab-grown diamond is completely indistinguishable from a mined diamond.

Myth 3: Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Not as Hard or Durable

Reality: Both natural and lab-grown diamonds score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale — the highest possible rating for any mineral. This means they are equally resistant to scratching. There is no difference in durability, toughness, or longevity between the two.

A lab-grown diamond set in a ring will last generations with the same care as a natural diamond ring. It will not cloud, chip, or lose brilliance any faster than a mined diamond.

Myth 4: They Are Not Certified

Reality: Lab-grown diamonds can be and routinely are certified by internationally recognised gemological laboratories including GIA, IGI, and SGL. In India, the IGI has a dedicated lab-grown diamond grading service widely used by jewellers across Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Surat.

Certified lab-grown diamonds come with a detailed grading report specifying cut, colour, clarity, and carat — identical in format and detail to natural diamond certificates. Always buy certified stones.

Myth 5: Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Only for People Who Cannot Afford Real Diamonds

Reality: This perception is outdated. Lab-grown diamonds are increasingly the choice of informed, discerning buyers who simply prefer to maximise the quality and size of their purchase. Many jewellery enthusiasts in Hyderabad's premium markets — in areas like Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, and Hitech City — are specifically seeking lab-grown diamonds as their first choice, not a fallback.

The decision to buy lab-grown is driven by intelligence and values, not budget limitation.

Myth 6: Lab Diamonds Will Fade or Turn Yellow Over Time

Reality: Lab-grown diamonds do not fade, discolour, or degrade over time. Like natural diamonds, they are chemically stable and will maintain their appearance indefinitely. Any yellowing seen in old jewellery is typically the result of dirt accumulation, metal oxidation, or a lower-quality simulant — never a lab-grown or natural diamond.

    The Verdict

Lab-grown diamonds are real, beautiful, durable, certified, and ethically produced. The myths surrounding them are largely the result of outdated marketing narratives or simple misunderstanding. As one of the world's fastest-growing jewellery categories, lab-grown diamonds are earning their place in engagement rings, bridal sets, and everyday fine jewellery collections across India and around the world.

The next time someone questions whether your diamond is real, you can confidently say: yes, it is. Certified by IGI, identical in every way to a mined diamond, and chosen with intention.
